From handy tips on navigating the city’s buses, metro, and tram systems to friendly advice on private transfer options and routes to popular spots, I’ve got all the info you need to make your Valencia experience as easy as possible! 

After calling Valencia home for over a decade, I’ve become quite familiar with how the public transportation system works here. Even though I don’t use it every day, I always find it handy for my trips into the city, whether it’s for shopping, enjoying a night out, or attending fun events like the Fallas festival. And you know what? I’ve never been let down by Valencia’s public transport—it’s always reliable, clean, and feels safe.

In this post, you will find an extensive guide on how to get around Valencia. While Valencia’s public transportation system may appear daunting initially, it’s actually quite straightforward to navigate. Unlike the bustling atmospheres of Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia offers a more relaxed vibe, except during peak times like Fallas or the summer season.

Nevertheless, the city’s public transport is not only affordable but also dependable and extensive. You’ll find a variety of options available, including buses, metro, tram, trains, bikes, scooters, and taxis, making it convenient to explore the city and its surroundings.

How to get around Valencia: Essential Guide to Public Transport in Valencia

Valencia Tourist Card

Overview

If you’re planning a quick city break, the Valencia Tourist Card is your key to maximising your experience. This convenient physical card allows you access to public transportation throughout the city and offers free entry to museums and monuments in Valencia.  You’ll can also enjoy exclusive discounts on various attractions including the L’Iber Toy Soldier Museum, tours in Albufera , shops, restaurants, and much more, allowing you to indulge in everything Valencia has to offer, including savouring some delightful beers and tapas. Usage Guidelines

Even if you decide to extend your stay beyond the card’s expiration, there’s no need to worry. Simply head to any Tourist Office to renew it for another 24, 48, or 72 hours, and enjoy a 10% discount on the extension. Just remember, only the same type of card you initially purchased can be reloaded.

Public Transport Options in Valencia

Valencia is a vibrant and beautiful city, and its attractions lie dotted all over the map. While the city centre is easily navigable on foot, walking absolutely everywhere would be over-ambitious. So you may also want to explore other areas of Valencia using public transportation, especially if you plan to visit attractions further away or venture to the beach areas.

By using the Moovit app allows you to efficiently plan your journey and access information regarding the schedules of arrivals of buses, trams, and the metro.

Although traffic in Valencia is relatively moderate compared to larger Spanish cities, it can get notably congested during peak hours, especially from 07:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 19:30. During these times, public transport experiences high demand as commuters travel to and from school or work.

EMT Bus

While exploring Valencia, you’ll probably spend a good chunk of your time in and around the city centre, soaking up its historic charm. To navigate this lively hub and venture into areas not easily accessible by trams or metro, Valencia’s EMT-operated city buses are your best way bet to uncover every corner of Valencia with ease.

Getting around Valencia by bus is simple and convenient. To start, familiarise yourself with the bus routes and schedules using resources like the Geoportal EMT website or the EMT Valencia app. Once you’ve planned your route, head to the nearest bus stop, identifiable by the EMT logo on a sign.

Valencias bus service is operated by EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes), providing public transportation services within Valencia city and its immediate surroundings. Buses in Valencia are equipped with features to ensure accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, including wheelchair ramps, designated seating areas, and priority boarding.

Stay informed with real-time information displays or announcements, ensuring you know exactly when to expect your stop. Some buses even offer complimentary WiFi, allowing you to stay connected on the go. And for those who need to power up their devices, USB charging ports are also available onboard.

Operating Hours

Bus services operate from 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM, with night services available from 10:30 PM to 2:00 AM on weekdays and 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM on weekends. Hours may differ during fiestas and public holidays. 

Ticket Purchase Locations

If you haven’t bought your València Tourist Card, you’ll need to pay for your ticket. You have a few options:

You can purchase a single ticket for €1.50 when you board the bus or through the EMTicket app.
Buy a bus voucher for €10.50 (€8.50 + €2 for the card), or the SUMA card for 10 trips on urban and interurban buses, metro, tram, and commuter trains for €10 (€8 + €2 for the card).

Metro VLC

The Valencia metro network spans 10 lines and 146 metro stations, offering extensive coverage throughout the city. Before your trip, take a moment to review the Valencia metro map and locate the station closest to your accommodation. This way, you can easily plan your metro routes to reach your desired attractions directly from where you’re staying.

Operating Hours

Weekdays see service operating from 4:00 AM to 11:30 PM, while weekends extend from 5:00 AM to 12:30 AM. During holidays and festivals, times can extend to 3:00am and FREE fare days are also brought in during special events or fiestas. Frequencies generally run around every 10 minutes, although they may differ depending on the line.  

Ticket Purchase Locations

Valencia’s metro and tram systems have 10 interconnected lines, ensuring comprehensive citywide access. Ticket prices vary depending on the number of zones crossed:

• €1.50 Zone 1
• €2.80 Zone 2
• €4.80 Zone 3

Alternatively, travellers can opt for the SUMA 10 voucher, priced at 8 euros, providing 10 trips with the ability to transfer between metro, tram, and bus. Tickets can be purchased at metro and tram stations.

Other Transport Modes

Train

Getting around Valencia by train is a convenient and efficient way to explore the city and its surrounding areas. The main train station in Valencia is Estación del Norte (North Station), located in the city centre. From there, you can access regional and long-distance trains to destinations within Valencia province and beyond.

At the North Station, ten platforms serve various lines and train types, catering to short-distance (Cercanías), mid-distance (Media Distancia or MD), and long-distance (Larga Distancia) journeys. Which is an excellent option if you want to visit the most popular destinations in the Valencian community including Castellon, Sagunto, Alicante, and Xativa. 

Ticket Purchase Locations

To use the train system, you can purchase tickets at the station ticket counters, self-service machines, or online through the Renfe website or app. It’s advisable to check schedules and plan your journey in advance, especially for longer trips or during peak travel times.

Taxi

When you’re feeling tired or simply want a quick ride back to your destination in Valencia, hopping into a taxi is a convenient option. Official taxis are easy to spot with their white colour and a green light on top indicating availability. Look for a sign inside indicating whether the taxi is occupied (“Ocupat”) or available (“Lliure”).

Taxi Ranks/Stands

Locating a taxi in Valencia is a pretty straight forward. Throughout the city, you’ll find taxi stands conveniently situated near key points such as the train station, metro stops, and many popular attractions.

Similarly, in Manises airport, taxi stands await just beyond the arrival gates. It’s as simple as approaching the first taxi in line, allowing you to get on your way swiftly and hassle-free.

Taxi Apps

In Valencia, while Uber isn’t an option, you can still rely on alternative apps like Cabify and Freenow for convenient taxi booking. Personally, I find this method the easiest. These apps are easy to use, allowing you to input your destination, receive an estimated fare, and make payment via NFC for a seamless experience. Plus, one of the most valuable features is the ability to track your taxi’s location in real-time, eliminating any uncertainty about its arrival time. With these apps, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing exactly when your ride will arrive plus its safe.

Bicycle and eScooter

Getting around Valencia by bicycle and eScooter can be both practical and exciting! Valencia is bike a friendly city and have an extensive network of bike and scooter lanes , making it easy and safe to explore the city on two wheels.

Renting a bicycle or opting for an eScooter from one of the many rental shops allows you to experience Valencia at your own pace while soaking in the sights and sounds of the city. Just make sure before setting out, to familiarise yourself with local traffic rules and regulations, and always prioritise safety by wearing a helmet and obeying traffic signals. 

TukTuk

TukTuks are great at manoeuvring through Valencia’s maze of narrow streets and hidden nooks, revealing charming spots and local secrets that even lifelong residents may have missed. Plus, they’re fully electric, making them not only environmentally friendly but also a guilt-free way to experience the city.

A TukTuk tour is like stepping into your own private adventure vehicle, driven by a local who knows the city like the back of their hand. It’s the perfect way for anyone, whether you’re new to Valencia or a seasoned traveler, to dive deep into the heart of the city without worrying about maps or directions.

Car Rental & Parking

Getting around Valencia by car hire offers you the freedom to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. Renting a car is relatively straightforward, with many rental companies available both at the airport and in online. You can book your car online in advance or upon arrival, depending on your preference.

In terms of driving, Valencia’s city centre is generally less congested and easier to navigate compared to larger cities like Madrid and Barcelona, which is known for its chaotic traffic, and limited parking options. 

Finding parking in Valencia can sometimes be a real headache, with restricted areas and perpetual busyness no matter the time of day. I can understand if it’s your first time that it can be overwhelming. To make things easier, I use the Telpark app just before I head off to the city. 

Using the Telpark app in Valencia is straightforward and hassle-free. Apps can be downloaded for iOs and Android. To create an account just provide your basic details, payment information, and add the vehicle you’ll be parking. Once you are ready to park, the app will locate parking zones available in Valencia. There are 4 Telpark car parks in Valencia city:

• Reino de Valencia
• Mercado de Ruzafa
• Juan Carlos I
• Bailén Ave

If your plans change and you need to extend your parking session, you can easily do so within the app. And when it’s time to leave, ending your parking session through the app stops any further charges. With Telpark, parking is so much easier and saves you time looking for available spaces, allowing you to spend less time worrying about parking and more time enjoying the city.

Getting to and From Valencia

Valencia is served by Valencia Airport (VLC), also known as Manises Airport. Check with airlines to see if they offer direct flights to Valencia from your departure city. If you’re coming from the UK, you can direct flights to Valencia from:

• Belfast International
• Birmingham
• Bristol
• East Midlands
• Edinburgh
• London Stansted
• Manchester

Alternatively, you may need to connect through a larger hub airport such as Madrid-Barajas Airport or Barcelona-El Prat Airport. 

From Alicante

By bus 

You can hop on a direct bus from Alicante Airport to Valencia, run by ALSA. The trip usually lasts about 3 to 4 hours, depending on the route and any stops along the way. Buses depart frequently right from the airport terminal. To secure your spot, it’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance through the ALSA website. It’s not only one of the most economical options but also a reliable way to get from Alicante Airport to Valencia.

By Train 

You can take a train from Alicante Airport to Valencia. First, take a shuttle bus or taxi from the airport to Alicante Train Station (Estación de Tren Alicante). From there, board a Renfe train to Valencia’s Estación del Norte (Valencia Nord). The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the train service. By Shuttle transfer 

Numerous private companies provide shuttle transfer services from Alicante Airport to Valencia, offering the convenience of door-to-door service. You can book these services in advance online or upon your arrival at the airport. While shuttle transfers may not be the most budget-friendly choice, they’re an ideal solution if you prefer to avoid navigating public transportation. If your priority is a hassle-free journey straight to Valencia, then a shuttle transfer is worth considering.

From Barcelona

By Bus

Several bus companies provide direct services from Barcelona to Valencia. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way. Buses depart from Barcelona’s Estació del Nord bus station and Barcelona El Prat Airport T1 and arrive at Valencia’s Estació d’Autobusos bus station. By Train

Renfe operates high-speed trains (AVE) between Barcelona and Valencia, offering a fast and efficient way to travel between the two cities. Trains depart regularly from Barcelona Sants station and arrive at Valencia Joaquín Sorolla station or Valencia Nord station. The journey takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the type of train.
