How do you find yourself when it comes to languages? Are you quite an impressive polyglot or like myself need that little help once in a while?
There are still occasions when I still find myself referring to my translator or having a quick refreshers on one of my language apps. Oh, how I wish my brain is like my 7-year-old, in the past two years he’s been learning Castellano, Valenciano and Chinese. Everything seems to be sinking in without any problems. What’s this superpower? And where can I get some?!
So when uTalk kindly approached me about an opportunity to review their product, I jumped at the chance! It’s been a while since I tried a new language learning app, I thought it would be interesting to check out something new.
uTalk is a free app available for iPhone and Ipad that offers the chance to learn from a choice of 111 languages. The app is a learning tool as well as a ‘phrasebook’ that covers common situations such as ordering at a restaurant, asking for directions and dealing with emergencies.
I find the app a real pleasure to use, with its slick interface. The smooth navigation glides you through the course, making learning seamless and easy. I particularly like the memory and speaking exercises, the recording and playback feature enables you to compare and perfect your pronunciation and accent. Though I find it cringeworthy hearing my own voice back in Spanish (a tip, try to use this practice when no one is around!).
I am also impressed with the wide range of categories, it covers a lot of phrases that matches the situation, and once you have downloaded your chosen language app, it is also available to use offline! My favourite feature would be the search function, looking for the right translations and phrases is SO easy, just type in your keyword and the matches are immediately shown.
As you progress through the exercises you can also collect achievements by unlocking the World Tour destinations. These little snippets of information is a great way to learn about certain parts of the world. Educational as well as fun!
Be warned this app is pretty addictive, my 7-year-old has already had a go, of course he finds it a doodle. It’s suitable for all ages, and I would highly recommend it especially to travelers and tourists. It’s already come in very handy in the past week. So far, I have used it to ask for someones mobile number ‘Cual is numero tu telefono?’ and I understood when someone mentioned the word blando another word for suave meaning smooth!
uTalk free version will give you access to 15 keywords such as greetings, pleasantries and common questions in all 111 languages, with paid upgrades Essentials (300 words) and Premium (1,200 words) available as in-app purchases. With over 111 languages to choose from, there is really no reason not to try it!
