Amidst the ups and downs of the pandemic, I stumbled upon a delightful silver lining – my blossoming love affair with plants. You see, back in the UK, succulents and cacti never quite piqued my interest. Maybe it was the dreary weather or the lack of outdoor space, but they just didn’t seem to fit into my life. However, since making the move to Spain, I’ve been absolutely enchanted by succulents and cacti.

Why I love succulents and cacti

Anyway, the great thing about succulents and cacti is that they are very easy to care for as long as they can get at least 8 hours of sunlight. Another reason why I love them! They grow well in Mediterranean climates and give your home that ‘holiday exotic feeling’ all year round.

Over the past year, I’ve gathered around 50 succulents and cacti – and counting! They mainly chill out on the terrace, soaking up the sun and breeze. But, you know, it’s not all about the plants; the pots matter too. So, here are some cool ones I’ve got my eye on. Check ’em out – hope you like them too!

How to pick a pot for succulents

Selecting the ideal succulent plant pot is akin to discovering the perfect cozy spot for a friend—it’s all about crafting a welcoming atmosphere! While the pot’s appearance is important, there’s a whole world of creativity waiting to be explored.

1.  Good Drainage

Ensure the pot you select has an effective drainage system in place. This helps prevent water from pooling in the soil, which could potentially harm your succulent.

2.  Pot Material

Don’t forget to think about the material of the pot as well. Terracotta and ceramic pots are excellent choices for succulents. They are porous materials that allow for proper drainage and airflow, helping to prevent overwatering and root rot. Additionally, they provide stability for the plant and come in a variety of styles to suit your aesthetic preferences.

3.  Pot Size

The ideal size for succulent pots depends on the specific type of succulent and its growth habits. Generally, it’s recommended to choose a pot that is slightly larger than the plant’s current size, allowing room for growth. However, it’s essential to avoid pots that are too large, as they can hold excess moisture and lead to root rot. As a general guideline, aim for a pot that provides about an inch or two of space around the plant’s roots. This allows for sufficient soil and root growth without risking overwatering.

3. Aesthetics

Consider the pot’s appearance and how it complements your succulent and home decor. Have fun exploring different styles, colours, and textures to find the perfect match for your plant.

4. Functionality

Think about practical aspects such as weight and stability. Ensure the pot is sturdy enough to support the weight of the plant and won’t easily tip over.
